Presenting Preservation Values in Persuasive Public Speaking
Presenting Preservation Values in Persuasive Public Speaking
Historic preservation lends itself very well to persuasive and interesting oratory, as it comes with beautiful imagery and local stories. However, we do face some specific challenges when preparing to speak about historic preservation. The resources in this course provide guidance intended to help you develop targeted presentations that are appropriate to the situation, communicate your message well, and generate enthusiasm and action in your audience.

The information built on previous knowledge logically, but the information about PowerPoint presentations felt dated. It makes sense to include TED talks and I really liked the information from the mindtools.com website, but that site limits access to 3 articles. As a result, I was not able to read about the Monroe Motivated Sequence, which was referenced in the last activity. The do-now exercise was good. For the do-later exercise, I would have preferred being directed to a curated selection of speeches. I am worried I will forget if I don't strike while the iron is hot!
*ARCUS Staff Response: Thanks for the feedback, Allison. We'll take a look at the PowerPoint piece.
To truly exemplify this course, I should start with a story! I won't, but will say that this course covers basic parameters for effective public speaking. While I am already familiar with the topic, I did learn several things. Thanks!
